80’s through about 2014. The pro- fessional version of this product allows some coding functions in various models, though it is some- what random on what you can and can’t do across the various model years. It will read down codes in most of the various models in the cars that it applies to. This was a really great tool in the mid 2000’s and you could really accomplish almost 100% of what you need to do when repairing a vehicle with this unit. Unfortunately, they have stopped updating their software, so as the cars got newer, the func- tions decreased until they almost

The downside is that even the good aftermarket companies are strug- gling to keep up with Porsche’s diagnostic requirements, and they are very hit or miss on newer mod- els they will service. For instance, before I acquired the PIWIS 3, a service on a 2018 Carrera GTS re- quired the PIWIS 2 for the oil fill- ing function, but it would not reset the service indicator, which then the Autel would perform. The Autel on the other hand doesn’t have the oil filling function for any of the models, and with how sensitive the new models are to oil level, you really need to be using the factory tool for proper

all ceased support around the 2014/5 model year. Autel and Icarsoft have continued better support, being able to access control modules as such, some programming functions, service resets, etc. Autel is more of a broad range diagnostic tool used across dozens of different manu- facturers, but their Porsche support is fairly decent. These units are constantly having programs updated online; Autel for instance, requires yearly updates running about $1000-1500 to keep current. Then there are Chinese knock offs of the factory computers which I strongly rec- ommend against.
