filling. So outside of having the most current diagnostic computer from Porsche, sometimes it takes a couple of computers to accom- plish a task. Another example is that the Autel will reset service lights on Macan’s through 2016, but beyond that the function will not complete.

At RennsportKC, I have always tried to keep up with servicing vehicles with the proper factory tools. In house, I have the fac- tory Porsche PST2, PIWIS2, and the PIWIS3 at my disposal in ad- dition to the Durametric and Autel Maxisys Elite (which also comes in handy for those occasional oth- er manufacturers I see like BMW, Mercedes, VW, Audi, Ford, etc). Sometimes some of the newer fac- tory computers will struggle with certain functions of an older car, so it is nice to have the original diagnostic equipment available. For instance, trying to read an air- bag light code on a 1998 Boxster recently, the PIWIS 2 nor Dura- metric would not read the con- trol module on that specific car (though it might on the next 1998 Boxster I would try). I pulled out the original PST2 for that model and was able to access the airbag code immediately. So even the factory tools that are supposed to be 100% compatible with previ- ous generations occasionally have

their hiccups. In short, as technol- ogy advances, the cars are quite honestly becoming more difficult to work on. Many issues are often solved by reflashing an electron- ic control module or performing what is called a vehicle handover procedure. Without the proper tools to perform these functions, you will often chase your tail on certain repairs.
