IT’S IN THE MOMENT
SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO STOP AND TAKE IT IN
YEARS
Iwas late. As Zone 10 Rep, I am supposed to be at all PCA Club Races. It was just past 7:00 AM and I needed to be in Topeka by 8:00 AM for the PCA Club Race drivers’ meeting, and I was running very late.
Lawrence could be seen in the distance. As if on cue, my iTunes began to randomly select songs from college days. Musings of the Alpha Chi quartet and Donna kept my mind busy as I held the highway’s arc to the south. Timing was still tight.
A hard cloverleaf on ramp to the right leads to a straight
shot to Topeka. The highway grows to three lanes wide there with long visibility ahead of you. Best opportunity to make up some time. I just might make it.
Topeka is the next three exits in rapid succession. Tap the brakes, blip the throttle, and down shift taking the third exit. It’s all green stoplights. A stroke of luck; there are minutes left.
The House of Speed tunnel welcomed me. I hung a left and parked. Stepping out of Boxy, I checked my watch. I made it. I took a few steps, stopped, and turned.

put me on K-10 and headed west. Clouds loomed in front of me and the sun was just cresting the horizon behind me. Despite the beauty around me I was feeling stressed. I was late.

Having spent four years in pursuit of a higher mind at KU, the trip west can be done almost on autopilot. Each crest and curve to the ribbon
of tarmac are known in order, as are the potential hiding spots of the local highway patrol. All good things to know when you are running late.
