Anyone that knows me
knows I’m a 911 guy,
and have been since
grade school (2nd grade ap-
parently as con rmed by a
classmate). But I also know
cool when I see it, and hav-
ing the opportunity to pur-
chase a 356 I’ve known
about since college days, at that point owned by my KU roommate’s parents, I could not refuse. Heck, I got to drive this car during a visit to their house after graduation in 1996, of course I had to buy it!
Porsche 356 production started in 1948. My example, completed on March 28, 1957 is a transition model. Just 88 units into the T2 production, the car carries characteristics of both T1 and T2 356A’s with the earlier dash layout but later teardrop taillights. Originally Polyantha Red, now in black with tan vinyl interior, this 356 retains its original 1,600cc engine and ”088” stamped body panels. Originally a California car, in 1981 it underwent a high-end restoration. A 1988 appraisal letter from Gary Emory, of “Outlaw 356” fame attests to the high quality of the restoration.
I purchased the 356 from their son and close friend, the aforementioned KU roommate, in 2012. In the time since the restoration, the only work performed has been cleaning and polishing, and minor maintenance to the engine and braking systems. More recently, rebuilding the carburetors and generator, along with a correct refurbished 356A distributor, will hopefully not only allow the 356 to make regular Saturday breakfast appearances.
