Next is a FACTORY manual seat slid- er that I have removed from an old set of 996 seats and mounted to the floor pan. They simply unbolt from the bottom of the OEM seat. There are some advan- tages and disadvantages of using a fac- tory seat slider. The biggest advantage is that it is an extremely solid double lock- ing seat slider, with the proper mount- ing holes and points to bolt straight to your factory floor pan, which greatly simplifies install. The sliding mecha- nism is extremely smooth, and the re- lease handle is perfectly positioned. One downside is that it takes a specially designed side mounting bracket to bolt onto the slider. The good news is that Brey Krause makes a couple of different styles for different sized seats. The big- gest downside though, is that it is a rela- tively tall slider when compared to say a universal slider from Sparco or Recaro. It probably raises the seat 1 inch..... and that doesn’t seem like a lot, but it is! Since this seat is going into our 981 Cayman race car, we are blessed with a little more headroom since the cars are bigger. If you are installing into a 986 chassis, I can tell you that unless you use a step stool to get things off the top shelf of your kitchen cabinets, you will have headroom issues. This is where you can use the aftermarket slider. Also, GMG Racing makes an aftermarket slider sys-
tem and mount that is about as low pro- file as is possible, which is another op- tion. This eliminates the need to do any drilling in the seat sliders to line up your side mounts. Often times side mounts of one brand don’t exactly line up with the holes in another brand’s side mount.
Here is a set of side adapters from Brey Krause for the OEM seat slid- ers. This is a slightly offset version to fit our Sparco Pro ADV Seat. How did we choose that offset? With some help from BK, of course. Knowing our seat base width and the fact that our side slid- ers are mounted apart with bolt holes on 16”centers; a bunch of math is done, and they send you seat sliders that pos- sibly might fit.......When new seats come out, it always is a bit fuzzy until they have confirmation of exact fitment. Notice the one side (which is the center console side in this case) has a threaded hole. This is so you can attach your pas- senger side lap harness belt to the seat for a secured mounting point rather than drilling to the center tunnel. If you have a race car, I would drill in the center tun- nel for a permanent mount. If you have a car that you still have full interior in, then use this inside mount. The outside mount for the other side lap belt can be attached to the mounting point of your stock OEM DOT belt.
