 TELL THE STORY NEVER LIFT NEVER TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS. There are many famous quotes relating driving to life. Steve McQueen’s best is, “Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting.” Ferdinand Porsche has many quotes. One of my favorites is, “Life itself is a race, marked by a start, and a finish. It is what we learn during the race, and how we apply it, that determines whether our participation has had particular value.” Ken Miles, in Ford vs. Ferrari, had a very poignant moment. He said to his son, Peter, “Look out there. Out there is the perfect lap. You see it?” Peter replied, “I think so.” Miles said, “Most people can’t.” the Porsche driving style of never lifting in a corner. Vic Elford tells great stories about his early days in racing, when keeping his foot down was the only thing that kept his car on the mountain road. But the more I thought about it, the more Bruce’s quote seems to have a much bigger life application in mind. Yes, catastrophic results can happen if you accelerate through life with complete disregard. I already knew that part. After all, Ferris Buehler told us that “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t slow down and look around, you might miss it.” It is the last part that resonated with me, “with proper execution \[of keeping one’s foot down\] has been known to create legends. There are many legends: legends of business, legends of sports, legends in the pursuit of knowledge, and our favorite racing legends. All are significantly memorable in their own right.
