into the realization that I needed to keep the entire cost below $10,000. That includes the car, shipping, Pre- Purchase Inspection (PPI), repairs if needed, and incidentals like tags, taxes, and car covers. Realistically, that translated to wanting to spend no more than $8000 on the car. That still left plenty of cars to consider. 944s, early Boxsters, and even early Cayennes fall into that range. While I love the way the 944 family looks, I didn’t have enough experience with the model to want to take the plunge. And, while the Cayenne remained a serious contender until the end, my heart just wasn’t with it. That left the early Boxster as my primary target.
After looking at reviews for what I’ll politely call “downstream” dealers in the area, I decided to stick to private sellers. The fact that most of the dealers also charged $300 - $600 in dealer prep fees helped make that decision easier. I eventually added Craig’s List to my search.
In order to have an unbiased look at the cars’ values, I relied on Edmunds. com and KBB.com. Edmunds has better information, in my opinion, but KBB’s pricing estimates are easier to navigate. The two had comparable values for the  rst couple of cars that
