supposed to be back at Heartland Park Topeka for their rst DE in 4 years, and I was packed and watching the clock.
I wear a lot of hats for the club; President, Editor for Der Sportwagen and 1/2 a hat when it comes to the website. My lovely wife, Deborah, is your webmaster. I get to help her. But on this Friday afternoon, I was planning on reveling in all things racing.
With evening approaching and rain beginning to sprinkle on the roads, I headed west. I’d seen posting throughout the day of my fellow KCRPCA’ers blasting around the track, singing the praises of its new repaving. I needed
K-10 was moving far too slow for my ghostly 996 twin turbo, but restraint kept me below triple digits. Freeing myself from Lawrence, I watched the sun disappear beyond the horizon and signs for Topeka soon appeared. A quick exit, a toll paid, and a quick squirt up the road and I had reached my grand destination for the evening, the Topeka Super 8 motel. Yes, I live large.
Biscuits and gravy greeted me when I stumbled downstairs for the start of the morning. The game plan was for Bob Wayman and I to get to the track before all the DE participants arrived. We made it to the scoring building and were soon joined by David Stadtmueller. Safety instructions were given out and the day started.
I spent the next 48 hours in Porsche- social-bliss. I walked the pits, thanking people for coming to our event. I helped line up the cars for the parade laps. I got to break bread with fellow Porsche enthusiasts, and just had a great time all around.
My highlight? Riding with David Stadtmueller as he surgically maneuvered a new Cayman S around the track. And that led to my one regret; I should have signed up for the DE. Parade laps were not enough. I needed track time. This September, I will be back out on the new track. Count on it.
