CAMPAIGN GOAL
CWadet Success & Experiential Learning
e provide cadets with outstanding academic and training experiences. Undergraduate degrees
are available in facilities engineering technology, global studies and maritime affairs, international business and logistics, marine engineering technology, marine transportation, mechanical engineering,
and oceanography.
A commitment to upward mobility and inclusiveness. Scholarships change lives. And sometimes they start with one person’s personal commitment to a bold idea. An example is the Banning High School Program, launched by Cal Maritime Alumnus Jim Morgan ‘76 in 2006, which gives talented young men and women from an economical- ly underserved Los Angeles school the opportunity to envision a new future.
Leadership development is an imperative at Cal Maritime. The Edwards Leadership Program began in 2011 after Tom Edwards visited Cal Maritime and observed the qualities of our cadets. He joined the California Maritime Academy Foundation Board and established the Edwards Leadership Program.
There is no substitute for experience. Through its innovative programs, Cal Maritime helps cadets develop global awareness, cultural competency, and real-world work experience in the maritime industry, both at sea and on shore.
• Training Cruises, required of all licensed majors, teach seagoing deck and engine skills.
• Internships provide cadets valuable practical work experience, an understanding of workplace culture,
and a jumpstart on the hiring process. Internships are one reason why our graduates are highly valued
and quickly achieve 100% employment.
• International Experience provides non-licensed majors three weeks of “boots on the ground” overseas
travel and related academic study, during which they visit foreign ports and tour shoreside businesses.
• Study Abroad opportunities include participation in CSU International Programs, a bi-lateral exchange
program with the Vietnam Maritime Academy, or programs of other approved third-party providers.

I couldn’t have attended Cal Maritime without the
Banning Scholarship. As soon as I arrived on the campus, I participated in a
wide variety of activities, including the Latino Club and the brand-new cross country team, which I captained for three years. After graduation, I went to the Long Beach Container Terminal and have been there
ever since. Cal Maritime and the Banning Scholarship made the life I have now possible. My husband (Philip Maksim ’14) and I give back whenever we can. We’re co-chairs of the Southern California Alumni Chapter
and we donate annually to the Banning Scholarship Fund.
I am forever grateful.
