ON THE CUTTING
Why is
Cal Maritime
launching its rst comprehensive
fundraising campaign now?
EDGE
LEADING THE WAY
CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN
First woman
to captain a
megaton cruise ship.
When I was a kid I told my dad I wanted to be a cruise
director and he said, “You can do
anything you want, including drive the
thing.” Now I do, “drive the thing,”
with thanks to Cal Maritime, where I
got my license to sail anything
from a tugboat to a supertanker and found a lifelong community of support. As a woman,
the sense of self Cal Maritime instilled in cadets was all the more important as I prepared to enter an industry where I continue to be a minority. Getting more women on board remains one of my goals and I’m grateful that Cal Maritime is doing its part to help make that happen.

It is the right time. The 40 million dollar campaign addresses opportunities and challenges that confront both the academy as an institution of higher education and the maritime profession it supports at this unique moment in our history.
The campaign will deliver on Cal Maritime’s promise to maintain and grow its reputation for both excellence in teaching and industry-leading research and training. It is a special opportunity to ensure the traditions, experiences, and partnerships developed over a century are of lasting bene t for cadets, for alumni, for maritime employers, and for the profession
at large.
In summary, LEADING THE WAY is an opportunity for all who support us to express his or her own values and aspirations for the academy’s future.

I KNEW RIGHT AWAY
I WASN’T GOING TO SAIL... but Cal Maritime prepares graduates
for so much more.
I graduated from Cal Maritime with the equivalent of
four years of hands-on work experience and with seven job o ers. I started at Genentech two days later and have been there ever since. Now that I do hiring for Genentech, I see that students from other schools simply aren’t ready to work from day one as are Cal Maritime grads. There’s tremendous power in the head start which those required internships provide.
