Our Legacy—
Tradition, Leadership & Innovation
—4—
Cal Maritime has evolved from a small nautical school, established in 1929 by the California State Assembly, to a complex educational institution that grants undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as extended learning certi cates, all as a unique and highly specialized campus of the California State University system.
As one of only seven maritime academies in
the United States, Cal Maritime has established a tradition of preparing workforce-ready graduates who will immediately bring value to any organization they join, whether government, corporate, foundation, nonpro t, or educational.
Today, Cal Maritime blends workforce development and leading-edge research—a combination of the
proven, formative aspects of the academy backed by the power of a larger research university network.
Cal Maritime serves as the U.S. Maritime Administration’s regional academy for California, Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, and Oregon. But as
the only United States maritime academy located on the Paci c Rim, Cal Maritime’s impact and in uence extend well beyond the western states.
One of the key foundations of a maritime education is global awareness with cultural competence. Cal Maritime serves employers and industries which are part of a complex network of supply chains, business interdependencies and international markets. Each requires high-level skills from our graduating cadets...ON DAY ONE.

bridging tradition to innovation.
CLOSER ALIGNMENT
California
Maritime Academy Foundation and
The Alumni Association
It’s very exciting to see how far Cal Maritime has come in recent years. And even more exciting than where we are today, is that we continue to be on an upward trajectory.
The quality of the Cal Maritime education and the career success of our alumni are becoming increasingly well known. And every improvement to our program adds more value to the Cal Maritime degree.
One of the outcomes of the campaign will be to bring the California Maritime Academy Foundation and the Alumni Association into closer alignment. The Foundation is about fundraising and the Association is about engaging alumni more fully. The two e orts are inextricably linked. By working closely together, we can enrich the cadet experience and build the stature of our alumni in the maritime profession.
We invite you to join with us in this e ort.
