Nguyen Van Thieu
President of South Vietnam
Thieu was a Vietnamese Army general during the French-
controlled rule in Indochina. He later served as
president of South Vietnam during the war against the
North.
During President Nguyen Cao Ky’s rule and throughout
the Vietnam War, Thieu maintained significant power
within the South Vietnamese government.
In 1967, he replaced Ky and remained president of South
Vietnam until 1975. Thieu fled to Taiwan just days
before the fall of Saigon.
