The Open Access Principle
Students are the reason colleges exist. Their aspirations, dreams and desire to improve
themselves compel students to enroll each year. Community Colleges play a vital role in
providing students with high quality, affordable pathways to their academic and career
goals.
Providing access is the key tenet of Portmore Community College. Open access means
that all members of our community—not just a select few—are afforded a pathway to at-
tain a college education, be it workforce training or through the pursuit of advanced de-
grees. Some sixty percent of our students are first generation college students. This
access to higher education serves to disrupt the cycle of intergenerational poverty and
provide civic and fiscal benefits to both students and communities.
