and the Irish who provided the world with some of the great-
est wits, Swift, Sheridan, Wilde and Shaw, don’t mind taking
responsibility for it.
Even the humour and satire of the early Irish bards, were well
known. Dr. Johnson said: “The Irish are a very truthful race.
They never speak well of one another.” If you tell an Irishman
a “Pat and Mick” joke, he is in no way offended but will tell you
several “Puddy and May-kel” jokes.
The Limerick is a vehicle for humour, earthiness and at times ridi-
cule . The metre is ancient and believed to go back to the eighth
century. Being metric, and having a regular pattern of beats
(sounds) both light and heavy — it is POETRY. The Best Country Music has to offer
It has five lines and is RISING RHYTHM, using ANAPAESTIC feet (2 Walk ups welcome
light/1 heavy) with an IAMBIC (1 light/1 heavy) lead in the first Outstanding Guest artists
