ACTIVITY TWO: Magic Change Bag

“I’ve also brought with me some very special magic sparkles which can be used to make wishes come true. You hold them in your palm like this (demonstrate hands clasped together), close your eyes (demonstrate) and make your wish. I’m going to give you all some right now. They’re just in this bag.” Ask the birthday child to reach in and pull out what is inside. They pull out a sock (you can use and old sock from your home). “Oh no I'm so embarrassed! What's this? We can't make our wishes come true with this! Who put this in here? Is this your smelly sock (direct your question to a cheeky child)?” Take the sock from the birthday child and dangle it in front of the children’s faces and say, “Eeeeew it’s so smelly!” Then say, “Let’s check to see if there are any sparkles in here as well.” Ask another volunteer to look inside. You tip the bag upside down and then inside out so the children can clearly see that there is nothing in there. You open the zipper and stick your hand through. “We’re going to have to send this smelly sock back to fairyland by Magic Express. The Magic Express is a bit like Royal Mail post but much, much faster!” Ask a volunteer to put the smelly sock in the bag for you. “I now need to say a special rhyme and it goes like this.”
Magic Express, please send today, This sock back to Fairyland, Without a delay.
Everyone says “1, 2, 3 Abracadabra!” You look inside the bag and the smelly sock is still there. “The Magic Express could not hear us. We need to be much louder. Turn up the volume and let’s try again.” Everyone says “1, 2, 3 Abracadabra,” this time much louder. “It’s still not working!” This time ask the birthday child to use the magic wand to tap the bag a magical number of times (how old they are) before getting everyone to say “1, 2, 3 Abracadabra!” one last time.
Choose a volunteer to look inside the bag and take out the magic sparkles. Sprinkle a small amount of sparkles in the palm of each child’s hand and help them to make their wishes. When magic is included in a two-hour party there is no need to hand out magic sparkles at the end of the party as well. Just hand out the sweets when you have finished.
