Resources for Summer Lesson 9: Feelings
Activity: ‘My Feelings’ written by Lucy Milan Davis
“I can do a trick with my face. Watch my face very carefully.” Present a neutral face. Hold your hands with palms towards your face and fingertips touching, just below your chin. Gradually slide your hands upwards. As your hands pass your face, change your lips to smile (while your hands are covering your mouth). Gradually slide your hands downwards and change your smile into a frown while your hands are covering your mouth. Change your frown to an excited face as you move your hands upwards again, and change your excited face to an angry one as you slide your hands downwards again (always changing your mouth when it is covered and your eyes when they are covered).
Ask the children to copy your actions as you perform the poem two times. Use the movements you have just demonstrated (above), matching your face to the words, for the first verse. Use the actions written next to the words for the second verse.
Sometimes I am happy and, Sometimes I am sad, Sometimes I’m excited and, Sometimes I am mad!
I show all of my feelings, (arms upwards and outwards in a circular motion) Through my body and my face, (point to your body and then your face) This makes me a special part, (tap chest with both hands to pulse)
Of the human race. (arms upwards and outwards in a circular motion)
Ask the children to help you say the words as you perform the poem two more times (still using the same actions).
Other Ideas!
Play some classical music and ask the children to walk around the room as though they are feeling happy/sad/excited/angry/scared/surprised/worried/relaxed/content etc.
