7. Action song: ‘On This Special Day’ written by Lucy Milan Davis
“Now let’s think of a way to say thank you to our mummies, aunties and grandmas for looking after us.” Clap your hands to the pulse as you sing the chorus acapella.
Chorus:
How can we say thanks today? Thanks today, thanks today? How can we say thanks today? On this special day?
“Let’s make them a card!”
Mime making a card as you sing the verse acapella.
Verse:
We can make a card today, Card today, card today. We can make a card today, On this special Day.
Sing the chorus again and then ask a volunteer to tell you their suggestion for something else to do on Mother’s Day. Perform the verse again using their chosen action. Repeat two more times.
Example verses:
We can paint a picture today... We can bake a cake today...
We can give a hug today... On this special day.
* Running time approx. 3 mins.
8. Working with Props: ‘I Love Mummy’ written by Lucy Milan Davis (tune of ‘Frere Jacques’, traditional)
“And now I’m going to teach you a special hiding game that you can play with your special person on Mother’s Day.” Sing the song acapella as you move the “imaginary parachute” from side to side to the pulse, then lift it up high as you sing “Peek-a-boo!” at the end.
Next, take out the real parachute. Choose a child to hide underneath and ask them which special person they would like to sing about (e.g. their mum, aunt or gran). Sing the song (remembering to change the lyrics accordingly e.g. I love Aunty) as you move the parachute from side to side to the pulse, then lift it up high as you sing “Peek-a-boo!” to reveal the hidden child.
Repeat until each child has had a turn. If necessary, you can choose two or three children who want to sing about the same person to hide at once.
