Resources for Summer Music Lesson Five
Activity: ‘We’re Gonna Play’ - adapted from 'I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My
Hair' by Rodgers and Hammerstein Toddlers and Preschoolers:
1. This children sing the song and play their percussion instruments in time with the pulse, pausing where indicated.
2. Sing the song as usual but with an alternate ending. (see lyrics below). Repeat the song, this time singing and playing as indicated by the lyrics of the previous alternate ending. Repeat the process until you have sung and played softly, loudly, quickly and slowly. The last time you sing the song use the ending "I think that's enough!"
Babies:
There are many ways you can do percussion activities with babies.
1. You can play their instrument in time with the pulse for them, so they can see and hear the pulse.
2. You can gently tap the instrument on the baby so they can see, hear and FEEL the pulse.
3. You can play the instrument with the baby, encouraging them to move it in time with the
pulse – so they can see, hear and feel the pulse.
4. The baby can explore and play with the instrument in any way they like. This will help
them to develop an interest in music.
The main goal is to help them to internalise the concept of pulse (or beat as it’s sometimes known). Use the alternate last lines in the lyrics below to help them experience other musical concepts (e.g. soft, loud, slow and fast).
Lyrics
We're gonna play, play, play, play, play and stop. x3 And then we'll play some more.
Alternate last lines
And then we'll play softly. And then we'll play loudly. And then we'll play slowly. And then we'll play quickly. I think that's enough!
Other Ideas!
1. Do an instrument making activity (e.g. rice in plastic bottles) with the children, so they can play their home made instruments as they sing the song.
2. Ask for volunteers to make up new movement based verses. E.g. We’re gonna jump, jump jump.... We’re gonna clap, clap, clap.... We’re gonna twirl, twirl, twirl... etc. You can still use the same alternate endings so the children (or example) jump softly, loudly, slowly and quickly.
