Summer Dance Lesson 7: Caterpillars into Butterflies 2
Activity: ‘There’s a Tiny a Caterpillar on a Leaf’ (‘She’ll be Comin’ ‘Round the Mountain’, traditional)
Wiggle RH pointer on LH palm and then wiggle whole body on “wiggle, wiggle” for the first verse. Pause to ask, “Does anyone know what caterpillars eat?” Mime eating and then rub tummy twice on “munch, munch” for second verse. Pause to ask, “Does anyone know the name of the home the caterpillar builds to sleep in while he turns into a butterfly?” Spin hands in front of you for third verse. “And what does he turn into?” Flap arms for fourth verse.
There’s a tiny caterpillar on a leaf. Wiggle, wiggle, There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf. Wiggle, wiggle. There's a tiny caterpillar, a tiny caterpillar,
There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf. Wiggle, wiggle.
He will eat the leaves around him till he's full. Munch, munch..... A cocoon is what he's spinning for his home. Spin, spin...
He will be a butterfly and fly like this. Flap, flap....
Other Ideas!
Ask the children to name some other minibeasts. Play some classical music (e.g. Miroirs: I. Noctuelles - Le Papillons Noirs) and ask them to move around the room like each of the named minbeasts. Encourage them to use their whole bodies and not just their hands.
