* Running time approx. 4 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the T-Rex mask. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “What is this animal called? That’s right, it’s a dinosaur! This dinosaur is a tyrannosaurus rex, but some people call it T-Rex for short.” Encourage the children to say “tyrannosaurus rex” with you three times.
b) “Where did dinosaurs live?”
c) “What sound did they make?”
d) “Let’s all roar as we pretend to be real dinosaurs!”
e) Ask a volunteer to suggest another type of dinosaur (e.g. pterodactyl,
triceratops, stegosaurus etc.).
f) You act out being the suggested dinosaur (using your upper body) and the
children copy you. Repeat using ideas from three more volunteers.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘I Am a Dinosaur’ written by Lily Newbury Freeman
“And now I’m going to show you my favourite dinosaur poem.” Stand up and demonstrate the whole poem with the actions. Next, encourage the children to copy you two lines at a time and then four lines at a time. Lastly, you and the children perform the poem all together. Ask any parents or staff present to act as your audience.
I am a dinosaur, (standing with hands on hips)
Standing strong and tall. (stand tall with arms stretched up high)
I have thick, thick skin, (brush left arm then right arm)
And a loud, loud roar! (roaring action)
I have pointy teeth, (point to teeth)
And long, sharp claws. (use hands as claws)
You can run between my feet, (spread legs out wide and point between them) But don’t come near my jaws! (shake head) ROAR!! (roaring action)
