1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles

4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out one of your pointer fingers and move it up your other arm like a caterpillar. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “Can anyone guess what I’m making with my finger?” Once the children have guessed correctly, get them to use their pointer fingers to make their own caterpillars.
b) “Where do caterpillars live (e.g. grass, plants, trees and cocoons [when they are turning into butterflies])?”
c) “Caterpillars are so tiny that we can hardly hear them. Let’s guess what sound they make.” Ask a volunteer to invent a caterpillar sound. The group copies the sound as they use their pointer fingers to be caterpillars.
d) “And what do caterpillars turn into?” Everyone uses their hands to make butterflies.
e) “Like caterpillars, butterflies are tiny so we can hardly hear them. Let’s guess what sound they make.” Ask a volunteer to invent a butterfly sound. The group copies the sound as they use their hands to be butterflies.
f) Ask a volunteer to demonstrate a butterfly sound and action simultaneously. Everyone copies. Repeat using ideas for a butterfly sound and action from two more volunteers.

5. Action song or poem: ‘The Little Caterpillar’ written by Unknown (sung to the traditional tune of ‘Incy Wincy Spider’)
“And now I’m going to show you my favourite caterpillar song.” Perform the whole song, encouraging the children to join in with the actions. Ask a volunteer to choose a new colour of butterfly to become. Perform the song again, changing the last line to include the suggested colour. Repeat two more times, using a different suggested
