The little caterpillar, (wriggle RH pointer on LH palm)
Curled up on a leaf. (as above)
Spun her cocoon, (spin fists around in in a roly poly motion)
And then fell fast asleep. (rest head on hands to side of face as though asleep) While she was sleeping, (as above)
She dreamed that she could fly, (as above)
And later when she woke, (yawn, stretching arms)
She was a purple butterfly. (stand up, spread wings and fly around the room for 10-15 secs like a butterfly)
NB: If you’re having trouble getting the children seated again after flying around the room, tell them that you are going to take colour suggestions from children who are seated quietly.

Egg = silently curl up on the floor like an egg
Caterpillar = wiggle whole body as you say “wiggle, wiggle, wiggle!”
Cocoon = hold hands with a partner and spin around as you say “spiiinnn!” Butterfly = run on tippy toes on the spot and flap arms like wings as you sing ‘Flutter, flutter butterfly’ (the first line from the song ‘Flutter, Flutter Butterfly’) Spider web = find a friend or two and hug them as you scream “Ahh!”
