* Running time approx. 4 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the beach ball laminate. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “What is in my picture?”
b) “Where can we find a beach ball?”
c) “Can everyone show me how you throw and catch a beach ball?” The children
mime doing this with you.
d) “Andwhatsounddoesitmakewhenwethrowitintheairandcatchit?”Everyone
mimes throwing and catching a beach ball and making a sound (e.g. “zoom!”).
e) Ask a volunteer to suggest another item that can be taken to the beach. You act out using the suggested item (using upper body) and the children copy you.
Repeat using suggestions from three more volunteers.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘Scoop Up Sand’ (sung to the traditional tune of ‘In and Out the Dusty Bluebells’)
“Let’s all take out a bucket and spade.” Sing the song and perform the actions as described below. The song is so simple and repetitive that the children should naturally join in with the singing and the actions without further instruction.
Scoop up sand and put it in your bucket, (mime scooping sand into a bucket in time with the pulse)
Scoop up sand and put it in your bucket, (as above)
