e) Mime opening up a giant treasure chest. Ask a volunteer to tell you one item that
they can see inside (e.g. gold coins, jewels, ice cream etc.). You act out using the suggested item (using upper body) and the children copy you. Repeat using ideas from three more volunteers.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘When I Was One’ written by Unknown
“Now it’s time for you to learn how to sing like pirates!” You perform the song acapella, encouraging the children to join in with the following actions (and the words if they already know the song). Try putting on a pirate voice while singing the captain’s part.
Hold up correct number of fingers and perform the indicated action for first line (‘When I was one/played the drum’). Make wave with arm for second and seventh lines (‘The day I went to sea/Over the Irish Sea’). All jump together on ‘jumped’ with hands on hips for third line. Salute the captain for fourth line. Sway and point left then right for fifth line (‘this way/that way’). Sway and point forwards and backwards for sixth line (‘forwards, backwards’). Tap tummies to pulse for eighth line (‘A bottle of...’). Point to yourself with thumb on the last line (‘And that’s the life for me’).
In between verses ask the children to tell you which number comes next. “After one comes...?”
