3. GET THE CHILDREN INTO A CIRCLE: ‘Let’s Make a Circle’ written by Anne Porter Without speaking, get the children into a circle by singing the following song acapella:
Let’s make a circle,
A circle a circle.
Let’s make a circle,
At insert Child’s Name’s birthday party.
Repeat until everyone is in a circle. Please use this song every time you need the children in a circle throughout the duration of the party.
4. WISHING SONG: ‘Starlight Starbright’ by Traditional
“Let’s see what I have in my sparkly magic bag today.” Reveal magic wand. “What’s this? What does a magic wand do? Today I’m going to show you how you can use it to make all of your wishes come true. You can wish for a treasure map to be like a real pirate, wings to be like a real fairy or you can wish for anything else that your heart desires! First you need to learn the special wishing song and it goes like this.” Point your wand to different children to the pulse as you sing the song acapella.
All:
Starlight, starbright,
First star I see tonight.
Wish I may, wish I might, Have this wish I wish tonight.
You: Birthday girl/boy, (insert Child’s Name) what’s your wish?
(you may need to give some suggestions)
Child: I wish for fairy wings. (the child invents their own wish)
You: (spoken) Now, let’s all say “One, two, three abracadabra”!
All (spoken): One, two three, abracadabra! (the children wave their imaginary wands)
Repeat several times as above, except for at the end of each verse when you ask the children to put their hand up if they would like to make a wish. You then sing “Hello, what’s your wish?” to a child that has their hand up. If you have more than ten children, you could try asking a few children at a time (at the end of each verse before saying “one, two, three abracadabra”) to speed up the activity. If you have more than 20 children you can ask everyone that hasn’t had a turn to shout their wish out at once.
5. CHOREOGRAPHED DANCE ONE: ‘Hey, Hey, Hey We’re All Pirate Dancing’ performed by The Wiggles Click on song name to open the video in YouTube.
“It’s time for you to learn how to dance like a pirate.” Give each child a pirate scarf (coloured scarf) to wear. Encourage any adults present to help you assist children that need help in tying the scarves around their necks. The scarf should be folded in half to make a triangle and then tied around the child’s neck with just one knot so it can be easily taken off to dance with at the end of the song. Practise the tricky moves, play the track and perform the dance as in the video.
6. PARACHUTE ACTIVITY WITH TOY/S ON TOP: ‘You Will See Her Fly’ by Lucy Milan Davis (sung to the traditional tune of ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’)
“Let’s see who’s hiding in my sparkly magic bag.” Reveal soft fairy toy. “Can anyone tell me why she has wings? Let’s see if we can use the parachute to make her fly. But first we must practise with the imaginary one.” Sing the song and perform the actions described below with the imaginary parachute. Then sing the song and perform the actions with the real parachute. Place the fairy toy on top and sing the song again, moving the parachute as described below. Repeat several times.
The fairy is so very small, (holding the parachute and walking around in a circle)
She’s quiet and she’s shy. (as above)
But if you stand very still, (still and singing quietly)
You will see her fly! (sing loudly and lift the parachute up high, flinging the toy into the air)
Tell the children that the fairy is feeling very lonely and needs some friends. Place as many soft toys and finger puppets as you have on top (so there are up to about 20 all together), encouraging the children to help you count how many there are as you do so. Repeat the activity two or three more times with all the toys on top. Don’t worry if they fall off. They always do!
