Spring Lesson Four: Food

Let’s Make a Circle Shake Your Sillies Out Yes We Can

Props Required
Music player, music speaker, sparkly magic bag, food market laminate and magic sparkles
Lesson Plan
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles
Play the track and perform actions as indicated by the lyrics. Make sure to use lots of energy!

2. Focus activity: ‘Yes We Can’ written by Unknown

3. Travel to Storyland

4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the food market laminate. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “Who can tell me what’s in this picture?”
b) “Put your hand up if you’d like to tell me the name of a food you can see.”
Listen to answers from three volunteers.
c) “What sound do we make when we eat?”
d) “Let’s all pretend to eat.” You lead the children in miming eating something
and making the sound as you do so.
e) Askavolunteertonametheirfavouritefood.Youactouteatingthenamed
food (using upper body) and the children copy you. Repeat using ideas
from three more volunteers.

5. Action song or poem: ‘Chop, Chop’ (traditional)
a) “My favourite food is fruit salad. Let’s make some now. First we need a giant bowl.” Mime taking out a giant bowl and the children should naturally
copy you. Ask a volunteer to suggest a fruit to include.
b) “Now we need to chop up our fruit!” Make your left hand the chopping board (flat palm facing up). Mime placing the suggested fruit on top of the chopping board. On the first, second and fourth lines of the rhyme, use your right hand to chop the fruit to the pulse. On the third line (“What we have left...”), brush the chopped-up fruit into the bowl to the pulse. During the final section (“Stir it round...”), make a stirring action to the pulse. Have a taste. “I think we need more fruit!” Ask a volunteer to suggest another
fruit to include.
