4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the picture of a girl running. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “What is the little girl doing in this picture?”
b) “What parts of her body is she using to help her run?”
c) “What does it sound like when we run?” Everyone makes a running sound
at the same time. There will likely be a variety of ideas.
d) Lead the children in making the sound of running. You can use ideas from
the children that you observed during point
e) Ask a volunteer to name a body part and tell everyone what it’s used for
(e.g. ears help us to hear/knees help us to bend). You act out using the named body part (e.g. listening with ears/bending with knees) and the children copy you. Repeat using ideas from three more volunteers.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’ (traditional)
Sing the song acapella and perform the actions as indicated. Make sure to sing slowly enough for the children to keep up with the movements.
Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes, Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes, And eyes and ears and mouth and nose,
Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes.
Everyone says “One, two, three abracadabra” to make their magic remote controls appear. Sing the song again but press pause at the end of each line.
