9. PARACHUTE ACTIVITY WITH HIDING: ‘The Pterodactyl Flaps Her Wings’ (tune of ‘Two Teddies on a Trampoline’ by Linda Bance)
“The pterodactyl flaps her wings up and down like this (demonstrate). We’re going to make our own Pterodactyl wings using the parachute.” Perform the following movements with the ‘imaginary parachute’ and then with the real parachute. Move the parachute up and down in time with the pulse, making sure to go up on “up” and down on “down”, as you sing the song acapella. For the spoken part, lower the parachute to the ground (so the children are crouching), and move it gently from side to side. Everyone jumps up and says “Roar” at the end.
The Pterodactyl flaps her wings, Up, down, up, down.
The Pterodactyl flaps her wings, Up, down, up, down.
(Spoken) When she’s feeling tired, She goes to sleep and snores, And all the baby dinosaurs, Wake her with a “Roar!!”
Choose three to five children (including the birthday child) to be dinosaurs and hide under the parachute. Repeat the song and movements as before. The dinosaurs in the middle should be hidden during the spoken part and revealed as everyone says “Roar!” Encourage the children in the middle to jump up and do a loud “Roar!” at the end. Repeat the activity until all the children have had a turn of hiding underneath the parachute.
If you have a party assistant or if there is a willing parent nearby, ask them to hold the opposite end of the parachute and encourage the children to all go under together as you sing the song one final time.
10. CHASING GAME: ‘Catch the Dinosaurs!’ (sung to the traditional tune of ‘Tiny Tim’)
“And now you’re going to have a short lesson on how to be a Pterodactyl. I am the teacher and you are my students. Follow me.” Sing the song acapella and perform the actions as indicated by the lyrics.
“Every Pterodactyl must know how to eat large insects.”
The Pterodactyls are eating, the Pterodactyls are eating, the Pterodactyls are eating, in the Pterodactyl class.
“Every Pterodactyl must know how to stamp their feet.”
The Pterodactyls are stamping, the Pterodactyls are stamping, the Pterodactyls are stamping, in the Pterodactyl class.
“Real Pterodactyls must know how to fly.”
The Pterodactyls are flying... The Pterodactyls are sleeping... The Pterodactyls are waking...
“Now I’m going be the T-Rex and see how many Pterodactyls I can catch!” Chase the children as you sing the final verse.
The T-Rex is chasing...
Ask the birthday boy/girl if they would like to be the next T-Rex. If they say no, choose someone with their hand up who managed to escape you. Remind the next T-Rex that when you sing, “The T-Rex is chasing” they must catch as many Pterodactyls as possible. Repeat and then choose a child who “managed to escape” to be the next T-Rex (otherwise they’ll all just be caught on purpose). Repeat as many times as necessary (for example if there is no pass the parcel and/or not many children you may get through the activities quickly and so extend this one, or if you are running
behind you could perform the activity just two or three times).
