Resources for Summer Dance Lesson 3: Going to the Beach 2
Activity: ‘At the Beach’ (tune of ‘The Wheels on the Bus’, traditional)
Get the children into a circle. Sing the song performing the actions described below using the ‘imaginary’ parachute. Take out the real parachute and sing the song whilst performing the actions again. Place a soft fish toy (or any other small soft toy) on top of the parachute and sing the song whilst performing the actions again. Repeat. If there is time, remove the soft toy and ask an adult to help you hold onto the parachute so that all the children can hide under as you sing the song and perform the actions again. Try to move the parachute in time with the pulse.
The waves in the ocean go up and down, (move parachute up and down as indicated) Up and down, up and down.
The waves in the ocean go up and down,
At the beach.
The crabs on the shore go side to side... (move parachute side to side as indicated) The tide of the sea goes in and out... (move parachute in and out as indicated) The wind at seaside goes whoosh, whoosh, whoosh... (shake the parachute)
Social Distancing Alterations
If you are unable to conduct parachute play due to social distancing, try performing the activity with scarves instead. Each child will need a separate scarf that will need to be washed after the session. The children move their scarves up and down, side to side, in and out etc. as indicated by the lyrics of the song.
Other Ideas!
Ask the children to tell you which creatures and objects you can find at the beach and make up new verses, using their ideas. E.g. The jelly fish go wibble wobble, wibble wobble, wibble wobble. The jelly fish go wibble wobble at the beach. The sunscreen lotion goes squirt, squirt, squirt...
The children use their whole bodies to become the creatures and objects as they sing.
