like: “DINOSAUR SAYS touch your toes/spin around/hug a friend/jump/clap” and remove the “DINOSAUR SAYS” whenever you see fit! Then move onto some dinosaur themed actions, such as roar/stomp your feet/flap your wings/swish your tail etc. You may need to demonstrate the dinosaur before including them in the game.
15. CHOREOGRAPHED DANCE TWO: ‘D.O.R.O.T.H.Y. My Favourite Dinosaur’ performed by The Wiggles
Click on song name to open the video in YouTube.
Hand each child a coloured scarf and practice the tricky moves. Play the track and perform the dance as in the video.
16. CHASING GAME*: ‘Catch the Dinosaurs!’ (sung to the traditional tune of ‘Tiny Tim’)
“And now you’re going to have a short lesson on how to be a Pterodactyl. I am the teacher and you are my students. Follow me.” Sing the song acapella and perform the actions as indicated by the lyrics.
“Every Pterodactyl must know how to eat large insects.”
The Pterodactyls are eating, the Pterodactyls are eating, the Pterodactyls are eating, in the Pterodactyl class.
“Every Pterodactyl must know how to stamp their feet.”
The Pterodactyls are stamping, the Pterodactyls are stamping, the Pterodactyls are stamping, in the Pterodactyl class.
“Real Pterodactyls must know how to fly.”
The Pterodactyls are flying... The Pterodactyls are sleeping... The Pterodactyls are waking...
“Now I’m going be the T-Rex and see how many Pterodactyls I can catch!” Chase the children as you sing the final verse.
The T-Rex is chasing...
Ask the birthday boy/girl if they would like to be the next T-Rex. If they say no, choose someone with their hand up who managed to escape you. Remind the next T-Rex that when you sing, “The T-Rex is chasing” they must catch as many Pterodactyls as possible. Repeat and then choose a child who “managed to escape” to be the next T-Rex (otherwise they’ll all just be caught on purpose). Repeat as many times as necessary (for example if there is no pass the parcel and/or not many children you may get through the activities quickly and so extend this one, or if you are running behind you could perform the activity just two or three times).
17. MUSICAL BUMPS: ‘Wings’ performed by Little Mix
Ask the children if they know the game ‘Musical Bumps’. Tell them we’re going to play a game just like it! “Now pterodactyls can fly high up in the sky but they jump down to earth whenever they see something yummy to eat!” Tell the children that as the music plays they are going to fly around the room just like a real pterodactyl (demonstrate pretending to fly around with your arms out wide as you say this) but when the music stops it means there is something yummy to eat on the ground and so they must jump down to land as soon as possible (demonstrate jumping down as you say this). You could even try pretending to eat and saying “mmm delicious!” in a very silly voice! Do not eliminate children or make anyone ‘out’. Rather, tell them that you will be watching carefully and if they jump down to the floor when the music stops, then they will all get some magic sparkles at the end of the party! Play the track and the children fly all around the room. Encourage them to do different types of movement
such as flying high, flying low, spinning around, and dancing! Pause the music sporadically and the children jump down to land. At the end of the game, congratulate
