d) “I am going to turn into the T-Rex every time the music stops.”
e) Give each child a dinosaur egg (egg shaker)
f) Play ‘Shake it Off’ and the children march around the room and shake their dinosaur eggs.
g) Pause the music and pretend to be the T-Rex. The children freeze. You get grumpy because
they’ve managed to escape you. “I’ll get you next time!” Try to be as silly as you can to make
the children laugh.
h) Repeat several times until you confess that the dinosaurs have beaten you and delivered the
dinosaur eggs back to their nests. You cry and say “I want my mummy!”
i) Walk away and when you turn back you are no longer the T-Rex. Tell the children that you’ve turned back into Dino Sparkles, congratulate them and tell them you will give them
their Haribo prize before you go home.
9. ACTION SONG OR POEM: ‘All Around the Swamp’ (sung to the traditional tune of ‘The Wheels on the Bus’)
Reveal one of your dinosaur masks (e.g. the Brachiosaurus), tell the children its name and an interesting fact about it. For ease, choose facts that are linked to the song (e.g. the Brachiosaurus was friendly and only ate plants and vegetables and not other dinosaurs). Encourage the children to say the dinosaur’s name with you three times. Repeat for each dinosaur mask.
Sing the song acapella performing actions as indicated. Take out the appropriate mask at the beginning of each verse to see if the children can remember the dinosaur’s name.
The Pterodactyl’s wings went flap, flap, flap, Flap, flap, flap, flap, flap, flap.
The Pterodactyl’s wings went flap, flap, flap, All around the swamp.
The Tyrannosaurus Rex went grr, grr, grr, Grr, grr, grr, grr, grr, grr.
The Tyrannosaurus Rex went grr, grr, grr, All around the swamp.
The Triceratops' horns went poke, poke, poke... The Brachiosaurus went munch, munch, munch... The Stegosaurus' tail went spike, spike, spike...
All the dinosaurs went zzz, zzz, zzz...
10. Dinosaur FOOTSTEPS*
Ask the children if they know a game called ‘Grandma’s Footsteps’. Tell them they’re going to play a game just like it called ‘Dinosaur Footsteps’. Tell them to stand in a line against the wall at the back of the room. You stand roughly five meters in front of them and place a dinosaur finger puppet on the floor just in front of you. Tell the children that if they can take the puppet without you noticing them then they will all have beaten you to become the winners! When you turn your back to the children they must creep towards you as quietly as they can, but when you turn to face them they must freeze! If you see them moving they must go back to the wall and start again. The game ends when one of the children manages to take the puppet whilst your back it turned. When you face the children and see that it has been taken, give them all a round of applause and congratulate them all on beating you. It’s important that they feel like it’s you against all of them (and not them playing against each other). You can play the game as many or as few times as required by your party timings.
NB: Don’t worry if the children start laughing/cheat- they always do!
11. TICKLING GAME
“It’s time for us to play with the parachute again!” Get out the parachute and tell the children to hold on to the edges and lie, eyes closed, with their feet underneath it, as if they are all tucked up in bed! Tell them that you are going to creep around the edge of the parachute and tap one of the children on the head. If you tap them on the head then they are going to be the Baby Dinosaur. The Baby Dinosaur’s job is to invite all the children to the Secret Dinosaur Party! The chosen child must then
crawl underneath the parachute and tickle the toes of the sleeping children. Tell the children that if their feet are tickled then they are invited to the Secret Dinosaur Party
