 Summer Music Lesson 10
Activity: ‘On a Log’
Babies:
Activities for classes with parents
1. Babies are bounced on an adult's lap for each onomatopoeia (glumf, sss, bzz or beh). 2. The group sits around the parachute, lifting it up for each onomatopoeia. Place a
small frog toy on top and repeat so that it jumps up into the air for each onomatopoeia.
Activities for classes in the nursery
1. Hold the frog toy on your arm and then jump him from one baby's feet to another
for each onomatopoeia (glumf, sss, bzz or beh).
2. Same as for classes with parents
Toddlers:
1. Reveal frog toy to introduce song. The children jump like a frog for each 'glumf'. They join their hands together to make a snake shape and move them from side to side for each 'sss'. They tickle a friend on each 'bzzz' or turn their hands into bee wings and move from side to side. They make their hand the goat's mouth and open it for each 'beh'.
2. Choose a volunteer to go into the middle of the circle. They do the action by themselves. Choose a different child for each verse. You should only do this step if your toddlers are 2 plus.
3. The group sits around the parachute, lifting it up for each onomatopoeia. Place a small frog toy on top and repeat so that it jumps up into the air for each onomatopoeia.
Pres-choolers:
1. Same as for toddlers.
2. Same as for toddlers. You can also try having two children in the middle being the
frogs. They each jump towards another child in the circle on each onomatopoeia. They take that child's place in the circle who then becomes one of two snakes in the middle and the process is repeated.
3. Same as for toddlers
4. Ask the children to see if they can count the number of times the frog jumps into the
air.
5. Recap activity one. The children sing the song and you indicate whether to sing out
loud or in thinking voices using a double sided traffic light picture (red for thinking voice and green for out loud). At the end of each phrase you flip it to red or green or you keep it on the same side. Do not flip it in the middle of a phrase. To begin with you will need to mouth the words for the children to follow whilst they are using thinking voices.
Lyrics
On a log, Mr Frog,
Sang his song the whole day long. Glumf, glumf, glumf, glumf.
In a lake, Mr Snake,
Sang his song until daybreak. Sss, sss, sss, sss.
In a tree, Mr Bee.
Sang his song for you and me. Bzz, bzz, bzz, bzz.
On a boat, Mr Goat,
Sang his song to keep afloat. Beh, beh, beh, beh.
