Summer Baby Music Lesson 4
P. 1
Resources for Summer Music Lesson Four Activity: Up and Down
1. Demonstrate the song with a small teddy, moving it up and down according to pitch and pulse.
2. The adults lift their babies up and down according to pitch and pulse.
3. The group sings the song and shows the pitch with the parachute, moving it up for the higher pitches and town for the lower pitches. "Let's send teddy on an adventure." Repeat with a small teddy on top. "Let's send him somewhere new.” Suggest other places to send teddy and adjust the lyrics accordingly. To make the activity more personal, find out if any of the children were born in different cities or countries and
use those place names.
Lyrics
Up and down and up and down, This is the way to London town.
Suggestions for alternate verses
Up and down and up and down, This is the way to Birmingham town.
... This is the way to Candy town.
... This is the way to Chocolate town. ... This is the way to Princess town...
Social Distancing Alterations
If you are unable to conduct parachute play due to social distancing, try performing the activity with scarves instead. Each child will need a separate scarf that will need to be washed after the session. The adults move their scarves up and down according to the pitch of the song. The babies can sit facing the grown ups so that the scarves hide and then reveal their faces as the adults lift the scarves up and down, like a peek-a-boo activity.
Musical aims:
P
To internalise pulse through being moved in time with the pulse
PA
To develop pitch awareness through linking pitch with movement
I
To experience improvisation (changing the place names)
EYFS Aims:
PSED (MR) (classes with parents only)
To build the parent/child relationship through being lifted up and tickled
PD (MH)
To improve fine motor skills through gripping and manipulating the parachute
