Next, the children sing ‘See Saw Up and Down’ as they strum a C chord with their thumbs, downwards and in time with the “pulse” (make sure to use the word “pulse”). Play along with the children to encourage them to play in time. Repeat several times.
Next, ask half the group to strum and half the group to sing and tap their ukuleles, and then switch.
Invite a volunteer to sing and strum the song whilst you pluck the rhythm (on G) and sing. “What’s it called when two people sing or play together (a duet)?”
Lastly, ask the whole group to strum and sing ‘See Saw Up and Down’ together. Remind them it can be tricky to sing and play at the same time so just to try their best.
“Your last piece of homework for this week is to sing and strum ‘Bell Horses’ and sing and strum ‘See Saw’.”
10. Let of Steam! (5 mins): ‘Up and Down’ (traditional)
“Earlier we sang the song ‘Up and Down’ and used our hands to show the pitch. We put our hands up for the higher pitches (demonstrate) and down for the lower pitches (demonstrate).” Sing the song and do the actions to remind the children.
“Now we’re going to show the pitch using the parachute! But first we need to practice using the ‘imaginary parachute’.” Sing the song, lifting the ‘imaginary parachute’ up for the higher notes and down for the lower notes, in time with the pulse.
Make sure everyone is seated in a circle and hand out the real parachute. Sing the song, lifting the parachute up for the higher notes and down for the lower notes, in time with the pulse.
“I think our parachute needs a passenger.” Reveal a small teddy from your sparkly magic bag. “My teddy wants to go to London Town!” Place the teddy on top of the parachute and sing the song as before, so teddy appears to be jumping up and down on the parachute.
“Teddy tells me he’s sick of travelling to London Town. Put your hand up if you’d like to suggest a new place for teddy to visit.” Repeat the activity, replacing “London” with the suggested place. Repeat using ideas from other volunteers (if time).
