Teacher’s ukulele, sparkly magic bag, birdie finger puppet, big teddy, G tuning fork, portable whiteboard and marker, small soft teddy and two other soft toys, chair for each child (placed in a circle) and parachute

1. Tune the Children’s Ukuleles as they Arrive (5-10 mins MAX)

‘Hello Everyone’
You sing “hello everyone” as birdie (holding the finger puppet up high) at a high C pitch.
The children respond, “hello birdie”, ideally at the same pitch.
You sing “hello everyone” as teddy (holding your big teddy down low) at a low C pitch.
The children respond, “hello teddy”, ideally at the same pitch.
Try mixing things up so sometimes singing as birdie then teddy, sometimes singing as teddy then birdie and sometimes singing as the same toy twice in a row. So, the children learn to adjust their voices based on which toy is singing to them.
Next, hide birdie and teddy behind your back and sing “hello everyone” as birdie or teddy. The children must sing back to the correct puppet by listening to your voice. Repeat several times (making sure to sing sometimes as birdie and sometimes as teddy). Ask the children how they knew which puppet was singing. Explain to them that we can tell because birdie sings at a high “pitch” and teddy sings at a low “pitch”.
