P. 26
See saw up and down,
In the air and on the ground.
Ask the children to sing the song as they tap the “pulse” on their thighs. You join in to help guide them.
Next, ask the children to count on their fingers how many “pulse beats” there are in the song whilst you sing and tap the pulse on your thighs. Ask the children how many beats they counted. Next, ask the children to count on their fingers again, whilst you ‘check’ how many there are. As the children sing and count, you draw 8 dots (in two rows of four) on the whiteboard in time with the pulse. Then, use those dots to draw 8 hearts on the whiteboard. You sing the song and tap the hearts with your marker (lid on) in time with the pulse to demonstrate the correct answer.
Next, choose a confident volunteer to sing the song on their own and tap the hearts in time with the pulse. Repeat until every child has had a turn of singing and tapping.
“Can anyone remember what ‘rhythm’ is?” Ask a volunteer to respond. “Let’s all sing ‘See Saw’ and clap the rhythm.” Everyone sings and claps the rhythm two times.
7. Plucking the Ukulele (8 mins): ‘Pease Pudding Hot’ (traditional) Hum the song but do the usual sounds and actions during the crotchet rests.
See if anyone can guess the name of the song.
Everyone sings the song and does the sounds and actions together.
Pease pudding hot! (blow on pudding) Pease pudding cold! (shiver)
Pease pudding in the pot,
Nine days old! (whisper)Yuk!
Some like it hot! (blow on pudding) Some like it cold! (shiver)
Some like it in the pot,
Nine days old! (whisper)Yuk!
You sing the song on your own and a volunteer stands and does the sounds and actions during the rests in the song on their own.
Next, a volunteer sings the song on their own whilst another volunteer does the sounds and actions during the rests. “What’s it called when two people perform together (a duet)?”
Ask the children to pick up their ukuleles. Everyone sings the song and instead of doing the silly sounds and actions during the rests, they tap the bodies of their ukuleles. Then, they sing the song and pluck the 1st string during the rests. “Which note does the first string play (A)”?
