“I’m going to sing a song by myself and when I finish, I want you to copy my singing and actions.” Sing the song holding your hand at forehead level for the higher pitches and just above belly button for the lower pitches (see video).
Up and down and, Up and down. This is the way to, London Town.
The children copy you immediately afterwards. Remind the children that they are only to do the actions when it is their turn to sing.
Repeat (you singing the song then the children copying you immediately afterwards), changing the name of the town to a real or imagined place (e.g. Canberra Town, Birmingham Town or Chocolate Town). Repeat a few times, singing about a different town each time.
Next, choose a volunteer to be the leader. Remind them to think of a town to sing about before they start singing. They sing the song (inserting their own town idea) and the rest of the children (and you) copy immediately afterwards. Make sure to sing at the same pitch as the volunteer. Repeat with two more volunteers.
“Now we’re going to show the pitch using the parachute! But first we need to practice using the ‘imaginary parachute’.” Sing the song (using the original “London Town” lyrics), lifting the ‘imaginary parachute’ up for the higher notes and down for the lower notes, in time with the pulse.
Make sure everyone is seated in a circle and hand out the real parachute. Sing the song, lifting the parachute up for the higher notes and down for the lower notes, in time with the pulse.
“I think our parachute needs a passenger.” Reveal small teddy from sparkly magic bag. “My teddy wants to go to London Town!” Place the teddy on top of the parachute and sing the song as before, so teddy appears to be jumping up and down on the parachute.
“Teddy is a bit lonely. Let’s see if there’s someone else hiding in my sparkly magic bag who can join him!” Reveal another soft toy from your sparkly magic bag, place it on top of the parachute and repeat. “Teddy is STILL lonely!” Reveal another soft toy from your sparkly magic bag, place it on top of the parachute and repeat. Get everyone to shout “1, 2, 3 up”, flinging the toys high into the air on “up” and then pop them back into your bag to have a rest after all of the excitement!
