8. Song/Game (6 mins): ‘Pease Pudding Hot’ (traditional)
Hum the song to see if the children can recognise it. Ask a volunteer to sing the song, performing the sounds and actions during the rests.
Pease pudding hot! (blow on pudding) Pease pudding cold! (shiver)
Pease pudding in the pot,
Nine days old! (whisper)Yuk!
Some like it hot! (blow on pudding) Some like it cold! (shiver)
Some like it in the pot,
Nine days old! (whisper)Yuk!
Everyone sings the song, performing the sounds and actions during the rests.
“I’m going to sing the song on my own but I’m going to do something different during the rests.” Sing the song on your own, putting an index finger to your lips (shh action) silently during the rests. “Was my new action loud, quiet or silent (silent)?” Everyone sings the song with the new silent action.
Ask a volunteer to think of another silent action. The group sings the song with the suggested action. Repeat two or three times with new volunteers.
“It’s time to make our very own Pease Pudding again, but this time when I blow children into the pot, I’m going to do it silently!” The children stand in a circle. You walk around the inside of the circle, tapping each child on the head on the beat and silently blowing on those children who fall on the 'yuk' rest. The children who are blown on must go into the porridge pot (they 'fall down' and sit in the middle of the circle). You can make the game more fun by telling the children you will be watching to see who does the most dramatic falling face and announcing a winner at the end. The game repeats until all children are in the circle. Once the porridge is finished, mime stirring it, pouring it into a bowl and tasting it. Using names, tell the children what they taste like. They will find this funny.
9. Strumming the Ukulele (6 mins): ‘Pease Pudding Hot’ (traditional)
Remind the children how to hold their ukuleles. See activity 5 ‘Tuning’ from lesson plan 1 for instructions. Please also take a look at the strumming instructions under activity 9 ‘Strumming the Ukulele’ in lesson 1.
Tell the children that today you will be teaching them a new chord: F. You strum an F chord. “F is the chord we use to strum ‘Pease Pudding Hot’.” You sing ‘Pease Pudding Hot’ and strum an F chord in time with the pulse.
Then, you sing and strum the song again whilst the children tap the bodies of their ukuleles during the rests.
Show the children how to finger an F chord on their ukuleles (finger 1 on 1st fret of 2nd string, finger 2 on 2nd fret of 4th string). The children will know the finger numbers from the ‘The Finger Game’. Get the children to take their fingers off the fretboard and finger the chord again several times. Remind them to place the left thumb at the back of the neck centre between first and second frets each time. “Don’t worry if you find the F chord tricky. We will be practicing this lots and every time you practice it will get easier. I found it VERY difficult to play the F chord when I first started learning.”
Everyone sings ‘Pease Pudding Hot’ and strums an F chord in time with the pulse.
