Summer Dance Lesson 9: Nursery Rhymes Two
Activity: ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’ (traditional)
The children are standing in a circle, holding onto the parachute. They walk it around in a circle as you sing the song acapella. Each time you sing “Pop!” they stop walking and quickly lift the parachute up. Repeat. Place a small teddy on top of the parachute. Repeat the activity and on “Pop!” the teddy should be flung up high into the air.
Lyrics:
Half a pound of tuppany rice, Half a pound of treacle.
That's the way the money goes, Pop goes the Weasel.
Up and down the city road,
In and out the Eagle.
That's the way the money goes, Pop goes the weasel.
Other Ideas!
1. Try performing the parachute activity slowly, then quickly.
2. The children skip around the room in a circle. Each time they sing “pop”, they jump
up as high as they can. Try this at a medium tempo, then slowly, then quickly.
3. The children are holding a dancing scarf or a small soft toy. They skip around the room and each time they sing “pop” they throw their soft toy or scarf up into the air
and then catch it. Try this at a medium tempo, then slowly, then quickly.
Adaptations for Social Distancing
If you need to limit physical contact and prop sharing due to social distancing, you may not be able to use the parachute. You can perform ‘Other Ideas’ two and three instead. However, it will be safer to skip on the spot and at a safe distance, instead of skipping around the room.
