Spring Drama Lesson 8 - Nursery Rhymes
P. 1

Resources for Spring Lesson Eight: Nursery Rhymes
Activity: Creating and Acting Out a Story
Say the Nursery Rhyme ‘Jack and Jill’ with your child.
Jack and Jill went up the hill,
To fetch a pale of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown and, Jill came tumbling after.
Explain to your child the definition of ‘pale of water’ and ‘crown’.
Ask your child to tell you “what happened next” (you may need to prompt them by saying the rhyme again slowly) and listen to their response. Then, say the rhyme again, adding your child’s new idea at the end. Ask them “what happened next” and listen to their response. Say the rhyme again, adding their two new story points to the end. Repeat 4 or 5 times, each time starting the rhyme from the beginning and adding all the new story points to the end. By the time you have taken 4 or 5 ideas, you should know the story well. Now you’re ready to lead them in acting it out!
Lead your child in acting out the main points of the story (the original rhyme plus each of the four or five ideas from your child). Every time a new character is introduced, encourage your child to become that character using their whole body. For each main story point, encourage your child to say one simple line or make at least one sound effect together with you.
