Resources for Summer Music Lesson Two Activity: Bernie Bee
1. The group is sitting in a circle. You shake the bee toy (or rattle or picture) up and down to the pulse. At the end of the rhyme, you fly the bee toy (make a 'buzzing' sound as you do so) to the child next to you. The child holding the bee toy shakes it up and down (with or without the help of an adult, depending on their stage of development) whilst you say the rhyme and clap the pulse. The rhyme is repeated until each child has had a turn of shaking the bee toy.
2. You tap the bee toy to the pulse on your shoulder as you say the rhyme. The adults in the room help the children do the same with their imaginary bees. At the end of the rhyme 'fly' the bee to another part of the body (e.g. head) and the children (with or without the help of an adult) do the same with their imaginary bees. Make a buzzing noise as you move the bee. Repeat the rhyme several times, using a different body part each time.
Lyrics
Bernie Bee, Bernie Bee,
Say when will your wedding be. If it be tomorrow day,
Raise your wings and fly away.
Other Ideas!
1. Turn it into a bouncing rhyme. Bounce your baby on your lap as you say the rhyme, then lift them up high as you say “away” at the end.
2. For all of the above activities - experiment with slow and fast bees (saying the rhyme and doing the actions slowly/quickly) and quiet and loud bees (saying the rhyme and doing the actions quietly/loudly).
