8. Working with Props: ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ written by Soloman Linda and the Evening Birds
Sing the lyrics below acapella as you move the “imaginary parachute” gently and slowly from side to side to the pulse. On ‘A wee um, um a weh’ lift it up and down in time with the pulse.
In the jungle the mighty jungle, The lion sleeps tonight.
In the jungle the mighty jungle, The lion sleeps tonight.
A wee um, um a weh.
Repeat with the real parachute. Choose a volunteer to be the “sleeping lion”. The volunteer hides under the parachute and pretends to sleep. Repeat the activity as before but this time when you sing ‘A wee um, um a weh’, the “sleeping lion” wakes up and roars as it crawls around under the parachute. You may need to call out “Wake up lion!” before you sing ‘A wee um, um a weh’, to encourage the lion to wake up at the correct time. Repeat until every child has had a turn. If you are worried about time, have two or three lions underneath the parachute at a time. *Running time approx. 5 mins.
9. Warm-down and give out magic sparkles See summer lesson one.
* Running time approx. 3 mins.
