Natural human cadaver scent materials can be hu- man placentas and blood or, if the governmental au- thority in charge approves, human cadaver parts.
The dog will now learn to di erentiate human cadav- er scent from animal cadaver scent, human fecal matter, packing materials etc.
The second training part deals with proper indication. Unlike other specialized working dogs, the Dachs- hund shall perform a passive indication or mark, mean-
ing he is supposed to sit or lie down when he detects the scent he was conditioned to recognize. The reason is ob- viously that an actively indicating or marking dog (active in the sense of indicating by scratching, barking, jump- ing) would be too dangerous for dog and handler in the small boats.
The handler is undergoing training parallel to the dog. Every handler of a Search and Recovery dog must be a fully trained life guard, must be able to navigate on a body of water with the proper use of a GPS and he must master praising his dog in a timely and clear manner.
Believe it or not, this is one of the hardest parts to learn for handlers.
