Reference Guide Food Fire Strategy Design
1.0 Overview
This report has been produced to meet the requirements for a fire strategy exemplar for the
Co-operative Food property portfolio. The guidance within this document is intended to be
used as an exemplar design and does not therefore provide the only route to compliance,
however any deviation from the solutions described herein should be assessed and
approved by a suitably qualified engineer.
Three distinct guidance notes have been produced for use in England and Wales and three
further guidance notes have been produced for use in Scotland. These are presented within
this report with the three building types to which these guidance notes apply as follows:
Model store (single storey)
This exemplar applies to Co-operative stores situated on one floor only, with all back-of-
house and ancillary space situated on the same floor as the main sales area. This
occupancy is independent of adjacencies and may therefore apply where there is
residential/further retail above or adjacent which are outside of the Co-op demise.
Model Store with Basement Accommodation
This note applies where the Co-operative store demise includes a basement area in addition
to a ground floor sales area.
Model Store with First Floor Accommodation
Applies where a ground floor unit incorporates upper storeys within the Co-op demise. It is
noted that this applies only where upper floors are accessible from within the store demise
and does not take account of independent tenancies such as residential.
Use of This Document
The six distinct guidance notes described herein are intended for exemplar use across the
Co-op property portfolio. Each note outlines the requirements for a different store design and
it is therefore appropriate for the designer to ascertain which high level design best suits the
proposed store. Due to the complexity and the breadth of properties within the Co-op
portfolio it is not possible to produce exemplar report to suit every store design, and as such
a ‘best-fit’ model should be adopted. It should be noted that the information contained within
