Fire Safety Signage
Fire safety signage for each Food store must be fitted to be conspicuous and compliant with the
relevant parts of the Health and Safety (Safety Signs & Signals) Regulations 1996, BS ISO 3864-1
and BS5499.
Illuminated Exit directional signage to be fitted above final exit doors and in conspicuous

areas where those unfamiliar with the building may have doubt as to the direction in which to
escape. (Where stores contain a sales floor of <280m , there is no requirement for illuminated

fire exit signage)
Fire door keep shut signage to be fitted to hazard room doors and those located within fire
resisting compartment and sub-compartment walls.
Fire action notices to be positioned at final exits adjacent to manual fire alarm call points. The
signs to contain correct information on raising the alarm, location of assembly point,
procedures for calling the fire service etc.
Push bar / pad signs to indicate operation of any panic hardware device fitted to final exit
doors.

Note ;
For clarity, fire exit signs above a final or storey exit should be internally illuminated emergency
escape lighting, all other exit direction signs should be illuminated externally by general emergency
lighting units;
