Page 8 - Psalm Songs
P. 8

Linking a Psalm Song with the Lectionary and Season
This Psalm Songs collection includes many but not all of the psalms set for the Sundays in the three-year Roman and Common Worship lectionaries. Look at the indices to find which psalm is set for a particular week. The collection includes the Common Psalms for each season as well as the psalms that appear most often in the lectionaries. Some psalms are included more than once where the settings have a contrasting style and mood.
Psalm Song themes
The indexes provide suggestions for choosing a psalm based on its theme or liturgical occasion.

For consistency, all the pieces have a keyboard accompaniment, although some may be more appropriate for the organ and others for piano. Lead sheets for songs that are also suitable for guitar accompaniment are available to download. For the settings that do not have an introduction, the accompanist may like to play the refrain over before the voices enter or use the last few bars of the refrain as an introduction to establish the tempo and mood.
Instruments
Instrumental parts are available online for many of the psalm settings. They can greatly enhance the music, adding colour and texture to the performance. Only add instruments once the singers and congregation are confident with their vocal lines.
