Navigating a Psalm Song
The structure of verse-refrain songs maybe unfamiliar to those musicians used to through-composed anthems or hymns. Space doesn’t allow all the songs to be set
out without repeats so it is important for all the musicians to familiarise themselves thoroughly with the ‘geography’ of the piece before performing it. Here are the repeat markings we have used:

The first-time ending has a repeat barline, sending us back to repeat the refrain. The next time we reach the first-time ending we skip it and sing the second-time bar instead. This leads us into the first verse of the song. Other repeat bar structures can be more complex, but the numbering will always make clear what the performers need to do.
Some of the settings have two refrains with the same set of verses for different occasions. Make sure everyone is singing the same response!
In both editions, the congregational part has been incorporated into the soprano line of the choir parts. If the melody of the refrain is in another part the congregational melody is written above the choir part.
