MILESTONE
mily Howell Warner, a woman of many firsts in the avia-
Eti on industry, including the fi rst woman hired as a pilot by
a US commercial airline and the first female commercial captain,
died July 3 in Littleton, in Denver, USA. She was 80 years old.
Warner was the first woman member of the Air Line Pilots
Association, the largest pilots union in the world and the
leader of the first all-female commercial flight crew. She is
an inducted member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame in
Dayton, Ohio and is included in the Smithsonian National Air
and Space Museum.
“When she was hired, I was so gung-ho,” said Maggie Po-
dunovich, a long-time friend and former Frontier Airlines flight
attendant. “I was like, ‘You go girl!’ ”
Podunovich, who worked many flights with Warner during
their careers, described her flying friend as an aviation trailblaz-
er. “She opened doors for so many women across the country.”
Warner was born on October 30, 1939, along with her twin
sister, Eileen, to John and Emily Hanrahan, according to the
National Aviation Hall of Fame. Her parents also had four sons.
Emily attended Holy Family high school and went to work
at the May Co. department store. Mulling over a career as a
stewardess in 1957, the young woman, who had never flown,
booked a round-trip flight to Gunnison. On the way home, she
was invited into the cockpit.
