While holidays are all about sunshine, laughter and making memories, they are also the perfect excuse to press pause on real life, swapping everyday routine for time spent indulging in some simple pleasures. As soon as the golden beaches come into view as we fly over the turquoise waters that surround Crete, all my thoughts turn to food. Even before the airplane wheels have touched down on tarmac I am already planning the feasts we will have around our villa’s dining over the days ahead.
eating fresh figs and Greek yogurt
in the early morning as the island wakes; sharing meze on the terrace at lunchtime ahead of an afternoon nap in the shade; cold drinks overlooking the beach while the sun dips down out of sight - if you want a relaxed family holiday full of love, warmth and good food, then Crete is the island for you.
With a history dating back over 4000 years, and a culture of welcoming visitors with open arms, there is more to Crete than just good food. Having a car is always a good idea when staying in Crete, as there is such a plethora of exciting places to explore. The island
is surrounded by a wealth of beautiful beaches perfect for soaking up the Mediterranean sunshine, but it’s for history lovers where Crete really comes alive! The island offers some of the most perfectly preserved remains of ancient civilisations that the world has to offer. Taking a trip to the Palace of Knossos will transport families back in time to the Bronze Age, and spending the day at Samaria Gorge will treat nature lovers to spectacular views 1000m above
sea level of a dozen canyons slashing through rugged mountains to arrive at the sea.
To end the day, a meal in Rethymnon Old Town will treat families to old cobbled streets, bustling tavernas and old town charm.
