10. Conservation Effort
Worldwide
Although the demands on land - for
agriculture, mining and building - are
increasing in almost every country around
the world, many scientists are trying to
maintain biodiversity by managing the
populations of endangered species. This
management is always a compromise,
because humans usually place their own
requirements above those of wildlife. As a
result, the conservation managers must be
prepared to plan to balance the needs of
local people with the scientists' long-term
plans to conserve individual species.
Some examples of species conservation are outlined
on the map on the opposite page. In each case, note
that there is a reason why the species is endangered.
